Shepherds of Arcadia I
Les Bergers d’Arcadie / Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, England
Painted by Nicolas Poussin in 1627, this was Poussin’s first painting in which the phrase ‘Et in Arcadia Ego’ stood central. It is commonly seen as an elaboration on the earlier Et in Arcadia Ego painting by Guercino. The painting was commissioned as part of two works by Cardinal Camillo Massimi, the twin-tableau being Midas Washing his Face in the River Pactolus.
